What a hoot: Owl attacks the best man!

It’s every photographer’s dream to capture a moment so unique that the whole world will want to see it. You hope that it will happen to you one day, and every time you press the shutter button you wonder, will this be the one…

I had no idea as I arrived at Peckforton Castle on Saturday morning that just a few days later I would have the world’s press beating down a path to my door for one of my photographs!

The photo in question was one of an owl, a surprise performer at the wedding of Jeni Arrowsmith and Mark Wood. The owl had been trained to deliver the rings to the best man, landing on his arm after a short flight from the back of the hall.

Ready for take off…

It was all going perfectly, but as the best man tried to remove the wedding rings from the pouch carried by the owl, something obviously was not right. The owl started to flap and fidget – and then I realised another of Mark’s best men (he had several) had lifted his arm and was pointing at the feathered ring bearer.

The thing is, the owl is trained to see this as a signal to fly to the hand, so off it goes and dive-bombs the guy – who happens to be terrified of birds. He’s so startled he falls off his chair, and as he’s cowering from the owl, I keep my finger on the shutter button and…

It was one of those moments I’ll never forget. The owl caused such a to-do that the registrar had to calm everybody down before they could carry on with the ceremony. I had no idea though how crazy it was about to get.

Requests for the photo started to flood in. Suddenly I’m on the BBC News Channel. Then I’m having a chat to a Canadian radio station after the story went viral and was featured in the Daily Mirror, the Telegraph, the Daily Mail plus US networks Fox News and ABC.

It’s unbelievable. I didn’t eat all day. My dream has come true. I’ve gone viral! It’s gone worldwide. My Twitter is going off every second and my phone hasn’t stopped ringing. I was so excited I even tweeted Harry Potter author JK Rowling about the owl photo!

All in all, my image was featured in loads of major news sites:

The Mirror

The Independent

The Sun

The Telegraph

BBC News

The Guardian

Fox News (US)

I feel so lucky to do the job I do. I’ve heard it said that taking a photograph is like pressing the pause button on life. In one single image a whole story can be told, a story that will last long after the speeches are finished, and the wedding cake has all been eaten. Although I’m enjoying this moment in the limelight, I also know that having my camera means I’m always one click away from creating memories that will last a lifetime.

My first month as a Freelance

Well what can I say? The last month has been chaotic but very exciting and I love having the freedom to spend time with my boys. I have been doing some PR work so I’ve gone back to my roots of press work which obviously I love.

Conwy Feast

I had the pleasure of photographing Gwledd Conwy Feast at the end of October. It’s a celebration of food, music and arts set in the medieval riverside town of Conwy. So much work goes into organising such an event hats off to everyone involved as I thoroughly enjoyed the whole weekend. So make sure you get yourselves tickets for next years festival. https://www.conwyfeast.co.uk/

Ramblers at Worlds End.

I was asked to cover a ramblers event in Llangollen whilst it was a freezing cold day I got some very good results I was desperate for a rainbow to appear and I was lucky enough I got one too. Volunteers are doing a great job fixing problems along the Offa’s Dyke Path take a look at the work they are doing just wonderful for our beautiful Countryside here in North Wales. http://www.ramblers.org.uk

Rubicon Garden Rooms

November I have been doing some work for Ceidiog PR http://ceidiog.com/pr/ One of the stories I was involved in was Paul Williams, a married father of one who built his own man cave in his back garden. I am tempted for my own ‘She’ cave to escape from the mad house. Would you be tempted? If so he bought it from the amazing http://www.rubicongardenrooms.co.uk This story was picked up by the Liverpool  Echo and The Mirror. I love seeing my work in the newspapers again.

Daisy & Honey

Jane & Mark

Well as November passes it’s been a fabulous month taking pictures of beautiful Daisy and her new puppy ‘Honey’ at Lymme Dam – a lovely location for portraits. We also celebrated the amazing wedding of Jane and Mark at Rowton Hall, Chester. A highly recommended venue and we had a beautiful autumn day too. Thanks to you both for letting us be a part of your day.

I’ve also met some wonderful couples who are getting married next year so looking forward to 2017 already.

I wonder what December will bring now?

Thanks for reading my blog as you can see it’s been a hectic month or so.

Dion & NataliePs I nearly forgot about my Guild of photographer bronze award for this image I am so delighted and thanks for everyone’s kind words. https://photoguild.co.uk

Blog

Hello and welcome…

HELLO and welcome to my first ever blog.

A bit daunting especially when my background was in journalism but taking pictures not words – so hey ho I will give it my best SHOT. Back in August I made the biggest decision of my life to leave the Newspaper Industry where I have worked since a teenager. I have always wanted to have my own business so with the big  4 0  fast approaching it was now or never. Some might say a midlife crisis? but no I am determined to make this happen.

With two young children Ollie, six and Lewis just 18 months I wanted to have more time with them so what better way than working for yourself and making your own decisions. Choosing which days I will be working and not feeling like I am missing out on them growing up.

So life in October has become very exciting. We’ve had a family holiday and now I am refreshed, ready for the challenges ahead. I know it won’t be an easy ride probably many up’s and many down’s  along the way. But what’s more important for me is that I am the happiest I have been for years.

I love my family but I love my job so now I have got the best of both worlds.

So if you know anyone getting married or would like a family portrait then please get in touch.

Thanks for reading and here is to plenty more blogs.
