As a wedding photographer based in Flintshire, I’m ideally placed for weddings across North Wales, Chester, Cheshire, and the North West. This means I get to work at some truly fabulous venues: I believe that North Wales and Cheshire have some of the finest wedding venues in the UK.

I often get asked which are my favourite wedding venues to shoot at, so I decided to start to put together a run down of my most-loved wedding venues throughout the North West. This month I’ll be focusing on two wedding venues in North Wales…

North Wales Wedding Photographer

When it comes to wedding photography, North Wales is hard to beat when it comes to venues that provide the perfect backdrop. North Wales is famous for its stunning countryside, and we also have a beautiful coastline too, both of which are pretty much the best backdrops for photography that you could wish for!

Whatever your tastes or theme of your wedding, North Wales has a venue for you. I’ve been lucky enough to be the wedding photographer at coastal hotels, fairytale castles, stately homes, and rural venues in the North Wales countryside.

You can see the first instalment of my Guide To North Wales Wedding Venues here. And now, here are some more of my favourite North Wales wedding venues, along with some stunning wedding photography to show off each venue…

Tower Hill Barns, North Wales

As a wedding photographer in North Wales, Tower Hill Barns is one of my favourite venues to work at. Tower Hill Barns is tucked away in the Welsh hills in a little village called Trevor near Llangollen, and is a lovely mix of old and modern: for example, if you choose to have your ceremony at Tower Hill Barns, it will be held in a 250 year old converted cattle barn that’s now been beautifully converted. This mix of old and new makes Tower Hill Barns a really versatile venue: whether you want a rustic barn style wedding, or a modern wedding full of light and space, this North Wales venue really does lend itself to any theme.

Tower Hill Barns boasts all the features that brides and grooms look for on their wedding day, from timber walls, pretty gardens and a wild flower meadow, to gorgeous views of the surrounding North Wales hills. One particular stand-out feature at Tower Hill Barns is the stunning outdoor space under a railway bridge where you can choose to get married: this is a really unique setting for a wedding ceremony and lends itself to some eye-catching wedding photography.

As a wedding photographer, the things we really love at venues are great light and an opportunity to capture some fantastic shots. Tower Hill Barns delivers both these things in abundance! The bright and airy barns offer a lovely light space for photography, and there are countless places to capture the perfect photo opportunity.

If you’re looking for a country wedding venue in North Wales that really does tick all the boxes, then Tower Hill Barns is the venue for you.

Chateau Rhianfa, North Wales

Chateau Rhianfa is a wedding photographer’s dream. This stunning Grade II listed chateau is the kind of venue that makes me feel very fortunate to be a wedding photographer in North Wales. Not only is it a real-life fairytale castle, it is also located in a beautiful and unique setting overlooking the Menai Strait.

Just looking at the exterior shots of this venue gives you a glimpse of how magical Chateau Rhianfa truly is. Situated in an imposing position up in the hills, the chateau is surrounded by beautiful mature gardens, and I’ve captured some stunning shots of couples at the romantic summer house situated in the grounds. This venue also benefits from being right on the Menai Strait, which means there are countless opportunities for waterside shots.

Inside the venue is just as elegant, with wood-panelled rooms giving an atmospheric feel throughout.

One of my favourite features of Chateau Rhianfa is the outside terrace. If you’re looking for a terrace with exceptional views, this one is hard to beat. It’s the ideal space for post-ceremony drinks, especially when the North Wales weather is behaving itself for once! I love capturing shots of guests enjoying a glass of fizz out on the terrace with the breathtaking views of the Menai Strait and the Snowdonia mountain range as a backdrop. As a wedding photographer, those are the kind of photo opportunities that stay in your mind long after the day has passed.

Hopefully this has been a useful glimpse into some more of North Wales’s finest wedding venues. Here’s a real life wedding story that I’ve been dying to share with you ever since I photographed it on the 7th May! When Jane and Mike asked me to photograph their wedding at Chateau Rhianfa I was absolutely thrilled. Chateau Rhianfa is the kind of venue that makes me feel very fortunate to be a wedding photographer in North Wales: it is absolutely stunning and located in a really unique setting overlooking the Menai Strait.

Chateau Rhianfa, North Wales

Chateau Rhianfa is a Grade II listed building in Anglesey, North Wales. Anyone looking for a fairytale wedding venue needs to look no further: this multi award winning luxury wedding venue is your very own fairytale castle! I just knew that when it came to wedding photography this venue would be a complete treat to work at, and the images I captured of Jane and Mike certainly didn’t disappoint!

On the morning of the wedding the Welsh weather was being kind to us, and I took the opportunity to take some fantastic external shots of the venue and the surrounding area in the morning light.

I then joined Jane for some bridal prep shots. I always love being a part of bridal prep as it’s such an exciting time right before the ceremony. Jane’s beautiful wedding dress was from Ivy and Oak, Lyndsey Marie did a fabulous job looking after make up, and Jane’s gorgeous bouquet was by Darling Buds Anglesey.

Jane and Mike have two lovely little boys, Theo and Sebastian, who were page boys for the day. Before the ceremony I spent a little time with Mike, Theo and Sebastian capturing some special shots outside the venue, which really highlight the unique beauty of the Chateau’s setting. I also spent some time photographing Mike and his groomsmen once they were all suited and booted.

The ceremony commenced at 11.30am in the beautiful oak-panelled ceremony room. Chateau Rhianfa really is a wedding venue where the interior is as breathtaking as the exterior: every room is romantic and elegant. As a wedding photographer, one of my favourite things is capturing those little candid moments that the bride and groom may not see on the day. During Mike and Jane’s ceremony I managed to take some great photos of their guests enjoying their ceremony- you can really see the emotion shining through in the images.

If you’re looking for a venue with the ideal space for post-ceremony drinks, Chateau Rhinafa is hard to beat! After the ceremony we headed outside to the terrace overlooking the Menai Strait and the Snowdonia mountain range. With background music from cellist Elin Taylor, the sun shining, and everyone enjoying themselves in the North Wales countryside, it really was an idyllic setting for champagne, canapes, and some outstanding wedding photography!

I love the photographs I captured of Mike and Jane spending a little quiet time together at the venue’s romantic summer house amongst the venue’s mature gardens. There are countless photo opportunities at the waterside too which we took full advantage of, and this resulted in some truly standout wedding photography.

The wedding breakfast took place in one of the venue’s oak-panelled reception rooms which are full of atmosphere and unique features. I captured some photos of Mike and Jane cutting their exquisite cake, which was created by Emmazing bakes.

After dinner, we found a little time to pop outside for some really creative shots which were great fun to shoot and look fantastic.

We headed back to the venue in time to enjoy the evening reception and music from band The Different Lights. As you can see from the photographs, it’s definitely safe to say that everyone had a brilliant evening!

I knew I would absolutely love being the wedding photographer for Jane and Mike’s wedding in North Wales. It really was the perfect day at the perfect venue: a wedding photographer’s dream! However, the thing that I really love about being a wedding photographer is knowing that I’ve made a positive difference to a couple’s day, so the icing on the cake for me was to receive this message from Jane:

We would like to say what a fantastic day we and our guests had and how delighted we were with all of the professionals on the day from yourself to the cellist, cake maker, and the band. And a special mention to the florist as I thought the flowers were beautiful. Plus Delyth & everyone at Rhianfa of course!”

Jane’s lovely feedback just proves that when us wedding professionals all work together, we really can make magic happen!

Before you got engaged and started looking for your wedding photographer, you probably didn’t realise that there are so many styles of wedding photography to choose from. The style of wedding photography you choose will come down to your tastes and preferences, your personality as a couple, and the kind of wedding you’re going to have.

I’m a wedding photographer in Chester and North Wales, and I specialise in natural, relaxed wedding photography. I would describe my style as ‘documentary style’ wedding photography: you may have heard this phrase, but what exactly does it mean?

Documentary style wedding photography is also sometimes referred to as ‘reportage’- basically, ‘reporting’ on your wedding day through images. What this means as a wedding photographer is that I capture the genuine events and emotions of your wedding day as they play out.

Documentary style wedding photographers are experts at blending into the background. We know that we will capture the most real and emotional moments when the subject of the image doesn’t know they’re being photographed. We are adept at making people feel at ease, and very often people pretty much forget that we’re even there!

Of course, I am always more than happy to help create group shots and posed photos too. The couples who hire me for their weddings tend to like a mixture of relaxed, natural photos, plus some posed shots where I work with the couple to create beautiful photographs for them to treasure. This really suits my style as I love to spend time with the couples I work with and create unique posed photographs just as much as I like to capture documentary-style photographs. In fact, I recently won Creative Wedding Photographer of the Year The Welsh Wedding Awards 2022 thanks to some of the unique posed shots I’ve created for brides and grooms. A wedding album that contains some natural, documentary style shots alongside stunning posed photos really does give couples the best of both worlds: a true reminder of their day, and some outstanding shots they can look back on and enjoy for years to come.

Why am I a documentary style wedding photographer?

My background is as a press photographer, which gave me years of experience in photographing events as they happened, and being ready in the moment to capture unique, emotive, and one-off images. I bring these skills and experiences to my wedding photography.

Very often, the brides and grooms who hire me to be their wedding photographer want a relaxed feel to their day- they don’t want photography that’s too staged, and they don’t want to feel as if they or their guests are being bossed about or herded around for photos! For this reason, I think it helps that I’m a relaxed and friendly person: my personality works with my style of photography, and I always ensure that I put the couple and their guests at ease on the day.

I am also a people person, and I love getting to know the couples I work with to come up with ideas for beautiful photographs that I know will genuinely suit their style, personality, and the theme of their wedding.

What I love about being a documentary style wedding photographer

I love that documentary style photography tells the true story of what happened on your wedding day. My wedding albums are a lasting record of how events unfolded on the day, and capture how you felt in every moment. I always aim to create photographs that my couples will look back on in the future and be transported right back to that moment in time.

Throughout my career as a wedding photographer, something I’ve learned is that unexpected, impromptu moments can sometimes result in the most humorous, unique, and stand-out wedding photographs. Being a documentary style photographer is all about being there in the right place at the right time and capturing the moment. One such moment was the time I snapped the split-second that a ring-bearing owl swooped down on a terrified best man after it flew down the altar towards the groom. This was a totally one-off image that could never be recreated again even if I tried a million times! It was a hilarious shot which even made international news! It’s these moments that you just can’t buy and being a documentary style wedding photographer means I get to be there to capture them first hand.

Is documentary style wedding photography right for you?

Choosing your wedding photographer really does come down to personal taste. Some couples like formal group shots, others love very glamorous, dream-like images. Then there are couples who prefer photos of those little hidden moments that they maybe didn’t even see themselves on their wedding day: a father’s reaction when he first sees his daughter, or a guest quietly shedding a tear during the ceremony. If you fall into the latter camp, then documentary style wedding photography may well be the style for you. Remember too that even if you do choose a documentary style wedding photographer, some of us are also experts in creating imaginative and unique posed shots too: we can chat about your ideas and ensure your wedding photography is everything you dreamed of and more.
